RICHARD FORD AND HIS DRAWINGS OF SEVILLE

Richard Ford was an English traveler, draftsman and Hispanist who made an extensive trip through Spain and was based for three years between Seville and Granada. During this period he made numerous drawings that stand out for their almost photographic accuracy and that are considered essential for the study of the iconography of Seville in the first half of the 19th century. Among these sketches are his famous drawings of the disappeared walls and gates of the city or those in which he represented some places that are still authentic symbols of the city of Seville, such as the Avenida de la Constitución. This Avenue of the Constitution of Seville, is the place where the touristic apartments are located Torre Homenaje Historical Suites, a magnificent location that has some of the most beautiful buildings in the city, including the Tower Abd el Aziz, an ideal place where our apartments in Seville are located.

RICHARD FORD, A LOVER OF SEVILLE

Born in London back in 1796, Richard Ford studied law and worked for some London newspapers as a journalist and draftsman before disembarking in 1830 in Gibraltar to go to Cadiz and board a steamship to Seville. In the capital of Andalusia he would establish his habitual residence, looking for a warmer climate than that of London and milder summers in the city of Granada.

Before his death he published the "Manual for Travelers in Spain", a work that crowned him as the Hispanic writer par excellence, bringing to the reader the Spain of the 19th century and the riches of Seville. Among them, the coexistence between Muslim and Christian culture, something that, it seems, was something exotic but at the same time close and welcoming for the author.

In the same way, the author reflected in his books the experiences and customs of Seville that had such an impact on him. Richard Ford was dazzled by the fashion of Spanish costumes, so in his manual he made it fashionable to acquire suits of majos like those seen at the fairs.

In short, Ford's work fixed, at all levels, the projection of Seville that foreign travelers would have for many years.

THE ABD EL AZIZ TOWER, DEPICTED IN HIS DRAWINGS

Richard Ford made a drawing in August 1832 showing a panoramic view of what was then known as the Plaza de Santo Tomás, today the intersection between the street of the same name and the Avenida de la Constitución. In it, the Tower of Abd el Aziz in the foreground, the Archive of the Indies and the wall of the Alcazar are easily identifiable.

Built in the twelfth century, the Tower of Abd el Aziz was part of the structure that surrounded the Alcazar, participating in its defense against possible invasions.

Inside it are currently the apartments Torre Homenaje Historical Suites, an unparalleled opportunity to stay in one of the most emblematic buildings of Seville.
